I meant to start reading the Full Metal Alchemist manga. I really did. However, back during finals week, I watched the first episode of Hunter x Hunter and really liked it. So, before I started in on the FMA manga, I decided to try the second episode out. Eheh.

In the past two days, I've watched up to episode 27. o_0 It's that good. There's even a character from Hunter x Hunter that I'm considering cosplaying; his name is Killua [キルア] and he's from a family of assassins. Personality-wise, he reminds me of Hiei from Yu Yu Hakusho. [As is turns out, Yoshihiro Togashi-sensei, the creator of the Hunter x Hunter manga, also created Yu Yu Hakusho, so it makes sense. ^_~]

Hunter x Hunter is basically about a twelve-year-old boy named Gon who wants to become a hunter. However, the term 'hunter' in this series doesn't refer to someone who goes out and shoots deer and other animals for food or sport. Rather, a 'hunter' is someone who has passed the very rigorous Hunter Exam and has a vast amount of knowledge on animals, nature, and fighting. Very few hunters actually kill animals.

Gon leaves his home to take the illustrious Hunter Exam in the first episode. During his various experiences, he becomes friends with three other hunter hopefuls: Leorio, a future doctor with a fiery temper, Kurapica, a teenage boy who wants to become a hunter so he can avenge the death of his people, and the aforementioned Killua. Each of these main characters is likeable in their own way, so you really can't go wrong there.

There's another very interesting character in Hunter x Hunter. His name? Hisoka. And he is absolutely nothing like Yami no Matsuei's Hisoka. Actually, he's a lot like Muraki, only without the sexual advances.

At the point where I am right now, they've just gotten to the final round of the Hunter Exam. That may not seem like much after 26 episodes, but the series is 62 episodes long. There are also three OVAs after the series, bringing the episode total to 92 and making this the longest anime I've ever gotten sucked into.

Random fun fact: Gon's seiyuu also voices Naruto [from Naruto].

So yeah. If you ever get a chance to see Hunter x Hunter, do check it out! And don't be shocked if you find the first episode somewhat childish and sappy; it really does get pretty violent and dark.

Edit from a later point: My description of Hisoka is off here; it might have helped if I had finished the TV series before posting this. One of these days, I shall have to write an actual review of Hunter x Hunter.

(DW note: Transferring because this is the first time I ever wrote about Hunter x Hunter.)
