Before I begin, let me first say that even with only a week or two past, my memory is sometimes sketchy. I tend to remember events vividly, but the dates and names blur quickly; I can recall what happened, but not which day it happened on.
In an attempt to prevent this, I kept a small notepad in my backpack to jot down the main events of each day on. However, while it started out well, so much happened in the week following PortCon that I forgot to update it until the weekend, which led to an interesting scene on Saturday night: me hunched on the floor, pen poised over paper and eyes narrowed in thought until, with a sigh in defeat, turning to Kun and asking, "What did we do on Tuesday?"
"Uh . . ."
". . ."
"Oh! That's the day we went to Weathervane and got lost in Dover!"
"That's right!" 'How did I forget that?'
So you can all thank Kun for Tuesday's narration.
The other thing I want to address beforehand is why this entry is only covering two days' worth. The answer is simple: Wednesday was a very eventful day and I want it to have its own entry; not only do I have two galleries of photos to upload from that day, but I also have several detailed anecdotes.
That said, to Monday!
Monday was a typical post-convention day. Kun and I lounged for most of it, sleeping in until 10 or 11 AM, then lazing around, talking, and watching a few DVDs. First up was The Road To El Dorado, a surprisingly good animated movie from Dreamworks. I had seen most of it on TV, but had missed the first twenty or so minutes. Instead of just watching the first part, however, I happily watched the whole movie. The two main male characters, best friends Miguel and Tulio, really make the movie and have excellent chemistry. Plus, the song "It's Tough To Be A God" is one of those that tends to get stuck in your head and you just have to listen to it one more time. (The animation that goes along with that song, however, is very trippy.)
Throughout my time in New Hampshire, El Dorado kept popping up every now and then, which was helped by the fact that Kun had the songs from it on her IPod, which she plays while driving.
After El Dorado, I believe it was me who made the suggestion that we watch some of the Chapter Black saga from Yuu Yuu Hakusho. I adore Chapter Black - it's easily the best arc of Yuu Yuu Hakusho - but I only had access to the English dub when I watched it and really wanted to see the original Japanese version. I had also not gotten to see the last two episodes of Chapter Black, so we watched those first, the catch being that Kun only had those episodes which subtitles that are so horrid that the subtitles can actually make you more confused than simply listening to the Japanese.
. . . oh my, did we have fun with those episodes. Bad subtitling aside, it was very Dragon Ball Z. Demon!Yuusuke jumping up and down on Sensui's chest like a monkey was too much for us both and we cracked up. However, the best part - and the scene we still need to make an icon of - was demon!Yuusuke grabbing Sensui's head and banging it with his own head repeatedly while both of them were flying through the air. It's already been decided that the text on this icon will be "Dram!", the bad subtitles' attempt at spelling "Damn!" from an episode during the Dark Tournament.
After that, and going back to the good subtitles, we went back and started Chapter Black properly. Amazingly enough, by the time I left, we manged to get through all of Chapter Black except for two episodes (Chapter Black is 27 episodes long; we watched 25). However, we also watched four episodes from the Dark Tournament (more stories about that later), so that's 29 episodes of Yuu Yuu Hakusho over a course of twelve days.
I'll be talking about the other shows we watched over our almost-two week period in more detail later, but here's a quick list: Houshin Engi (9 episodes), Harukanaru Toki no Naka de (1 episode), Black Cat (5 episodes), and Yami no Matsuei (all 13 episodes). I also showed Kun episodes 1, 30 (the Killua and Illumi confrontation episode), 45 (the Kurapika-centric episode that kicks off York Shin arc), and 46 (the episode where Gon first brings Killua to Whale Island) of Hunter x Hunter, plus assorted clips from both musicals, in an attempt to introduce the series to her and see if she likes it. We also watched various things online, including the newest Yuugiou: The Abridged Series episodes and this hilarious Zelda parody.
Finally, Monday was also the day that Kun brought out her Gundam Wing figures and we had an impromptu photoshoot which can be seen here. Apparently, we're both easily amused and prone to strange ideas when tired.
I believe Tuesday morning was the day that we made blueberry pancakes for breakfast. They were very tasty and it was the first time in years that I had actual maple syrup instead of the artificial concoction.
The majority of Tuesday was also spent lazing, watching series, and talking. This might have been the day that Kun first showed me Tales of Legendia, but I'm not sure . . . (There will also be more about Legendia later.)
Our big adventure of Tuesday started out in the afternoon around 4 PM. Kun wanted to take me to Newick's, a restaurant with a reputation for excellent seafood. However, the closest Newick's had recently closed and the next nearest was in Dover, about an hour's drive away. (According to Kun, whenever she sees a restaurant or store she'd like to take me to, it usually ends up closing within six months. It's a high probability that it's only coincidence, but sometimes I wonder if it isn't something like Black Cat's Train: "I've come to give you some bad luck.")
Despite the distance, it promised to be an entertaining road trip and we set off to blaze that trail with directions from MapQuest (probably not the best idea) that had us going down into Massachusetts and then back up into New Hampshire.
Things were going pretty well until we found the road that Newick's was supposedly on. The restaurant number was 400-something, but the numbers on the street ended around 380. Puzzled, we drove up and down the street several times and even called Kun's mum a few times for help, but we simply couldn't find it. What was even more strange was that the road was almost entirely residential, but fortunately for us, there was a small commercial strip that featured a Weathervane seafood restaurant. At that point, we were both hungry and seafood was seafood, so we decided to give up on Newick's and eat there instead.
After we finished eating, we had a bit of a problem: because we had never ended up at our destination, our directions for the way back were useless. To compound our frustration, we noticed a sign for Newick's near the exit we had first turned off of that we had missed before. While normally this might have been rather irritating, we were in a good mood and with no place to be for the rest of the day, it felt like we had all the time in the world to go adventuring through the roadways.
As it happens, Kun has a rare ability to find her way to her destination without getting lost and we made our way home safely with only one wrong turn taken along the way. During the drive, Kun would intermittently say: "I know where we are! . . . oh, wait. Maybe? Um . . . yes, I do!" Tomo also inadvertently helped us, as he happened to call Kun's cell phone while we were driving to talk about possibly getting together for breakfast the next day; Once he heard about our situation, he quickly gave us the number of the exit we needed to take to get home.
Our last stop of the night before home was to have ice cream with Chris and his brother, who had also called us while we were driving.
