This semester is probably the strangest I've had. One gen ed class that I never grew to like, the ever-present Japanese language class, two Philosophy classes - one fairly easy, the other challenging to the extreme - and a class that made me often want to never do research in East Asia.

I'll miss Logic. It was different from anything I've taken before; fascinating with a good teacher who wasn't appreciated nearly enough. It's easy to complain about the difficulty while you're doing it, but the formidable tasks are often the ones that make you grow the most. There's nothing quite like the accomplishment that comes from finally figuring out a proof after hours of work. It's a rush and at times like that I don't think maths majors are that crazy after all.

East Asian Research was a challenge of a different sort; after spending those first few weeks on such mind-numbingly easy assignments like how to use a word processor, I don't think any of us were expecting the insaneness that was the calligraphy assignment. That was the peak of difficulty, but there was definitely an invisible point somewhere when the class went into overdrive to make up for the wimpy beginning. Despite that, it's almost always entertaining to watch Blum and Deblasi interact; I wish they would teach more classes together.

Japanese was the smallest class we've had - only nine people. It seemed like it took a while for us to warm up to each other, which makes ending now just a bit triste. We had a good group of people, most of whom would migrate to EARS together afterwards. Very enjoyable. Of course, a number of them are going to Japan - either for the semester or the year - so I doubt we'll have a group with quite that dynamic again.

American Politics and Ethics I really don't have much to say about. They were my easiest classes. Though I am a bit surprised that I didn't enjoy Ethics nearly as much as I thought I would; it might have had something to do with the fact that the class moved slowly and was always behind schedule.

Spent a good three hours in Logic review today. Japanese written final tomorrow, Logic final Friday, American Politics final next Tuesday, and Ethics final Wednesday. Glad I got my EARS project done Monday night. And for once, our Japanese exam isn't at 8 in the morning.
