I've been watching through the A&E Hornblower series again with my parents with two DVDs every weekend. This weekend was 'Mutiny' and 'Retribution', the fifth and sixth DVDs of the series. 'Mutiny' is also my favourite of the Hornblower films, though I've still yet to see the last two: 'Loyalty' and 'Duty'. However, it's 'Retribution' that touches me deepest, pulling on the strings of sacrifice and loyalty between best friends.
From events that began in 'Mutiny', Horatio is now on trial for his life. He's almost sure to be hanged, if only as a scapegoat, when Archie, mortally wounded from a bullet to the stomach, steps forward to take the blame. This is the final conversation between Horatio and Archie:
Horatio: Why?
Archie: Look at me. There isn't a gallows in the world that can touch me now.
Horatio: Archie . . .
Archie: It doesn't hurt, Horatio. Don't let them say it hurts. But . . . I am frightened.
Horatio: You're the bravest man I know, Archie.
Archie: A little prone to panic.
Horatio: Archie, you're the one who jumped off a cliff with a man who can't swim and another who's afraid of heights.
Archie: So I am.
Horatio: You didn't panic then.
Archie: And none now.
Horatio: And none when you stood up in court and took the blame.
Archie: Poor Horatio. So quick to give. So slow to accept the simplest gift. You've done the same for me, and others besides, a thousand times.
Horatio: But never at such a dear cost.
Archie: Please take what I offer. Just take it and say goodbye.
Horatio: Archie . . . I am honoured to have served with you.
Archie: And I to have known you. You see? Better already.
Horatio: . . . my dear friend.
It's Archie's line -- "Poor Horatio. So quick to give. So slow to accept the simplest gift." -- that gets to me every time.
It's sad to see Archie go. But if there's a better way to die, I don't know it.
In honour of Fourth Lieutenant Archie Kennedy, I'm posting this Horatio music video that I found on YouTube. After watching almost all of the ones posted, I think this one is the best and is a fitting tribute. The fact that I love rain didn't hurt.

Edit: I just found out that there's an annual Hornblower convention that takes place in Halifax [at least it's in Halifax this year].
